Bed linen and towel hire in rented studio normal?

Hi,

We are due to arrive in Avignon for a week this Saturday. Having had a quick look at the place we have hired, it says there is bed linen and towel hire charge. My colleague who has been in France this year in a cottage says that%26#39;s normal. I%26#39;m wondering what sort of fee we should expect to pay, it%26#39;s only 2 of us in a studio flat and I%26#39;m surprised a rate isn%26#39;t quoted which makes me worry there is scope for them to charge something really high. How can we object if we have nothing to sleep on??

I guess we could bring our own towels...

Any suggestions on where to eat on the first night? Our address is RUE DES LYONNAIS which I gather is near the town. Budget is fairly limited, we like our food but like good value too. Won%26#39;t be dressed for anything too fancy.

Fingers crossed the weather is good too!

Hi,

the charge for bed linen in my last 2 rentals was 15 Euro per person per week and 10 Euros for the towels. If you are on a budget, why not just bring them yourselves?

Have fun.

Hi

If on a budget,or even if not, go for menu du jour,we have found these dishes to be very good value, a great way of trying regional dishes, often the wine is included with the price. We were paying around 12 euros a head this year and that would be for 3 courses and as said sometimes even included the wine.

It is common to charge additionally for the linens -- you can also find numerous properties for which the linens are included. It won%26#39;t be much -- I think the most we paid as a family of three was 30E for the week.

I pack my own.

I second the suggestion to go with the menu du jour -- read the menu or signboard to get an idea of the offerings and prices, and look for good smells and the sound of locals.

avoid stuff that is right on the main drag -- go a half a block off of it, and you%26#39;ll find terrific family-owned restaurants with great food and good prices.

Thanks for those replies everyone, menu du jour it is, and thankfully we always try to avoid the main drag for restaurants, I much prefer the little local places that you stumble across when you least expect it.

Think we will take our own towels but not the bed linen, but at least it%26#39;s something we can be aware of in the future.

Can%26#39;t wait, only 3 days before we head off!!

I know a number of people who take camping towels -- they%26#39;re extremely absorbent, and pack up small with very little weight.

I keep waffling on whether or not to buy them, as they%26#39;re not cheap, but the advantages aren%26#39;t lost on me!

It all depends on which airline you%26#39;re flying and what the baggage policy dictates.

I buy my sheets and towels at a charity shop, wash them, and then, since I%26#39;ve spent only a little bit, don%26#39;t feel guilty if I have to leave them behind for space or weight issues.

have a great time and let us know how you get on.

We travel by motor bike so packing has to be thought through, we have the micro towels (from any good camping shop)yes they are on the pricey side but well worth it, ours are about 8 years old now and still look like new.We also have the micro flannel, though in hindsight, not a bad idea to buy hand/bath towel, cut up and hem, It was about the same price as a towel.

Wow, thanks for all those helpful ideas. I have seen those towels in camping shops, they look weird but I guess they do the job! We%26#39;ve got some clothes looked out and I think we%26#39;ll take some old towels we use for the gym but definitely not bothering on the bed sheet front, way too much hassle. I have just never come across that before, but then again, we have tended to stay in timeshare places or hotels mostly. We%26#39;ve only got allowance for 22 kg for one of us, think that should be more than enough for a week.

Totally unprepared for heading off tomorrow, tonight will be a manic rush through the house finding the summer wear that we%26#39;ve not worn for a year! No idea where the sunglasses are at all.

Looking forward to that first glass of wine when we arrive... I will let you know how we got on, although I suspect it may be a dull report. Planning to chill a lot!

Thanks again.

You might want to pack a light weight jacket. We%26#39;ve had a good bit of rain. Forecast for next week calls for an improvement starting around Wednesday.

Darn! but thanks for that weather tip. I get cool easily anyway so will have something with me and will definitely need a sweater before we leave Edinburgh! May take a little unbrella too.
