crossing from Spain to France for one night?

we want to attend services for Yom Kipper and are staying in San Sebastian-the nearest synagogue is in Bayonne-does anyone know if it is a problem to cross the border back and forth in a rented Avis car for this purpose?

Hi -

When you rent the car it%26#39;s a good idea to have them insert the fact that you%26#39;ll be crossing into Spain so there%26#39;s no insurance argument/problem if something untoward should occur. As long as you%26#39;re returning the car in Spain, there shouldn%26#39;t be any problem. The border formalities are a thing of the past since the inception of the EC.

We drove from Carcassonne to Spain and to Andorra in a car hired from Hertz. There were no problems.

If you check the small print of your hire agreement, you should see a disclaimer about not taking the car from the mainland i.e. not taking it to Corsica or whatever. But there should be no insurance issues or legal issues about taking the car across the border.

The standard terms and conditions of all the major car rental companies allow cars to be taken anywhere in western Europe without problem or any extra approvals.

There shouldn%26#39;t be any problems... except for traffic at the toll booth in either direction. With Yom Kipper staring on a Sunday this year, traffic should be light heading up into the Pays Basque. Just make sure you have change available.

If you have the time, and want to avoid the toll booth at the %26quot;border%26quot;, you can take a more scenic route through Bera (Navarra), following the old smugglers route that leads to Sare. From Sare it%26#39;s a short 30 minute drive into Bayonne.

You might even consider visiting La Bastide Clairence, where there was a 17th century Jewish settlement(maribelsguides.com/mg_pays_basque.pdf).
