Boat trip to Corsica in October.

We will be in Nice from 1st to the 7th October, and would like to see cannes, monaco, visit Corsica for ? a day?

Naturally we will spend a day in Nice itself, wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere.

What advice on a loose itinerary please, and does the boat still go to Corsica at this time of year?

Many thanks for any advice, direction, and ideas.

The ferry to Corsica from Nice takes more than 5 hours minimum each way. I think that might be too much for a day trip. You can fly but would suggest there is a lot to see on the mainland and if you do decide to go to Corsica devote 2/3 days. To visit Cannes, Antibes, or any other of the towns along the Riviera coast can be done by bus or train if you are not driving. If you are driving there are lots of interesting villages inland mentioned in other posts in the Riviera forum.

The day trips are one the high speed ferry ,so a 3 hour crossing. Its a long day out but a feasible day trip. There are different options 5hours or 9 hours in port.

HOWEVER , although the ferry runs all year round - in practise there aren%26#39;t the same number of crossings per day or even every day from Nice so the day trips finish in september and start again in april. There are normnally overnight and weekend offers in winter but they haven%26#39;t been put on the website yet.

for folk visiting Nice in Nice in spetember there is a special offer of a 30euro per person trip to Ile Rousse on corsica

on either the 18th or 25th september - 5 hours in port

There are 2 companies that do the journey.

SNCM - I don%26#39;t think the ferries run from Nice in October, only from Marseille. During summer the SNCM do day returns which give you about 5 hours in Corsica. Here%26#39;s their website:

Corsica Ferries do trips all year round I think, but much less frequently after summer. Their website is:

Corsica ferries don%26#39;t do day trips as such - its a long crossing with them [slow boats 5+hours]

They do overnight ferry ,day in corsica then overnight ferry again

or vice versa for cosica residents.

SNCM have some crossings in every winter month from Nice but not daily or high speed

The sncm marseille service is several times a day all year round

Thanks folks for your contributions.

Perhaps we should concentrate on visiting the local villages, once we have had the pleasure of seeing Nice itself, which we are so looking forward to.

Anyone else have any ideas for a loose itinerary for me for my visit, and anything particular going on fro 1st-7th October, as ever much obliged.

Merci.

Corsica is a non-trivial distance around three hours each way, and the timing of ferry departures doesn%26#39;t really lend itself to a foot-passenger day trip. Even as an overnight stay without your own transport its not really worth it, especially a hostage to the weather which can be changeable. Its not impossible but ...

The rest of your itinerary is fine - Monaco and Cannes are an easy choice. Add Antibes, and a couple of inland perched villages - Eze Village and St Paul de Vence are the most popular options. You can do a two-stop day excursion, and will fill a week no problem

nICElIFE,

That sounds perfect for us, and there will be no pressure.

Thank-you so much.

I%26#39;d suggets a trip by train into the mountains if you fancy a longer day out.

There is the option of the Nice -Tende line - train des merveilles line. Interesting places en route are Breil sur roya, sospel, la brigue, tende etc . Journey has beautiful views as the train line is high up and an interesting corckscrew tunnel.

If you sit by the driver%26#39;s cab he/she will often point out the tunnel to the nearby passengers - of if you go with the tour guide on the official %26#39;train des merveilles%26#39; journey then they will describe the route in french and then english [if you make yourself known to the guide as an english speaker]

the other train ride day trip would be the train des pignes out to Entrevaux - totally different experience- tiny 1970s trains which run along the side of the river so down in the valley with the mountains towering all around - amazing but different scenery
