Please tell me about the 11th

Hi,

I am currently planning my 3rd trip to PAris and this time we have decided to rent an apartment. There are three of us, incl. my 11 yo son. The last 2 times I have stayed in the 5th. I initially started looking in that area simply because the street names and locations had meaning for me so I could orient myself. But, after researching I realised I would get better value for money elsewhere so I am currently considering the 11th. But..... it is not an area I have actually been to, so the names of streets and areas means nothing to me.

I have always felt very safe and at home in Paris, I%26#39;m assuming I will feel the same in the 11th? We want somewhere with good value restaurants, preferably within easy distance of a street market, an easy safe walk to and from the metro or bus. A park would be nice but not essential. Night life is not required. I don;%26#39;t want it to be so far that we can%26#39;t walk tover to the Latin Quarter at least in one direction. We prefer to walk everywhere if poosible.

There are a few flats that look nice around Bastille. I did search the forum for Bastille comments but found the resultant discussion confused me more than it helped!

Any thoughts greatly appreciated, I%26#39;ve been feeling a bit overwhelemd by the HUGE numbers of apartments, and at least narrowing down an area would help! My budget is certianly restricting me too.

The 11th has been for the past few years the %26quot;in%26quot; place to be. Lots of good restaurants and cafes have opened there, and especially clubs on the Rue Oberkampf. It%26#39;s a youngish crowd mostly, and pretty residential.

It is not an easy walk to the 5th arrondissement. It%26#39;s do-able (you can walk anywhere in paris, really) but not a convenient jaunt. Bastille would probably be the closest to the Latin Quarter, as it borders the 4th/Marais, etc.

It%26#39;s a nice area, safe, no problems there.

I%26#39;m now looking specifically at Rue Lacharriere if anyone can help.

Not walkable to Quartier Latin or St-Germain but if you take bus 75 at République on on Rue Faubourg du Temple (close to Canal St-Martin and Oberkampf) it wil bring you sraight to Rue du Rivoli at Hotel-de-Ville or Pont-Neuf. You can then easily walk to St-Germain and Boulevard St-Michel. Or hop on bus 72 to go further on Rue de Rivoli towards the Champs.

Bus 69 at Bastille brings you up to Père Lachaise oron the other side on Left Bank to Champ de Mars.

Bus 96 on Oberkampf brings you straight to Montparnasse (with St-Grmain on its way)

We stayed in the 11th arrond in December last year. Took a walk around the area the first night and where enamoured to find one street that had boulangeries, fish deli%26#39;s, boucheries, and small food markets, one next to the other.

The area had brasserie%26#39;s on just about every corner where we could have a drink/snack.

We stayed in a small hotel which was just around the corner from the Vaugirard Metro which we used extensively, a 5 minute walk for the hotel.

OOOPS....just made a booboo

We did not stay in the 11th but the 15th arrond.

Please ignore my previous post

Sorry

Bump. I%26#39;d particularly like 2 cents from Irish on this.

Many thanks

I live right next to Rue Lacharrière. It%26#39;s a really quaint neighbourhood street between Rue Saint Maur and Avenue Parmentier which borders a small park. You will find plenty of shops on Rue Saint Maur.

There is a street market on Boulevard Richard Lenoir (15 minutes walk).

Walking to the Marais takes roughly 25 minutes.

A good choice IMO.
