Hi, I have seen many variations on the transport question. This is what I need to work out: We finish our holiday in Sarlat. We will have a car. We will fly out of Paris. I like the idea of leaving the car in Brive and getting the train back to Paris. The plane departs midday - so we should probably stay overnight somewhere, and then get to the airport the following morning. We have been to Paris recently, so would prefer to overnight somewhere else. Would it be %26quot;doable%26quot; to go to Chartes for the overnight and then leave in the morning for CDG airport? Or would this be very complicated? I really look forward to some advice on this - or other ideas of places for the overnight! Thanks. Vicolivia

You leave CDG at mid-day for a flight home that I%26#39;m sure you don%26#39;t want to miss. You need to be at CDG 3 hours before your flight to check in. It takes about 2.5 hours to get from Chartres to CDG if everything goes smoothly. Need I say more?
IMO staying anywhere outside taxi or RER reach of the airport would be inadvisable. Versailles would I suppose be possible, but you%26#39;d have to be heading to the airport by around 7:30 am and you%26#39;d be travelling across Paris at rush hour...

Hello Irish Rovr - good to hear from you again! You were a great help when we planned our trips (in 2007 and 2008) which included Mirepoix and Villefranche sur Mer, Normandy and the Loire. As usual, your comments make a lot of sense! I think we needed that reality check! So, I think it had better be more like this: Drive from Sarlat to Brive. Drop off the car. Catch the train (I think it ends up at Gare Austelitz). I understand there is an Air france bus from Gare Montparnasse to CDG (or the RER - yet to check what is best). Stay overnight in Montparnasse area. Get up nice and early and head off for the airport! Does this sound more sensible? Any other suggestions would be most welcome! Thank you again - funny how one gets to %26quot;know%26quot; someone through TA - all your advice last year was so helpful

Hello again, Vicolivia! Yes indeed I remember you. And so you%26#39;ve got a bad case of the France bug? Well, nothing to do but plan another trip. When are you coming this time and which parts are going to have the privilege of having you as a visitor?
I like your plan B a whole lot better, and I%26#39;m sure you will too. Yes there is an Air France bus from Montparnasse so that would be a good possibility. Otherwise if you stay near the Luxembourg or St. Michel stations you could take the RER. And of course you have other options if you decided you wanted to stay on the other side of the river for some reason.
If it were me I%26#39;d pick a hotel that I liked in an area where I could take a last stroll after dinner and preferably not too far from a favourite restaurant.
Incidentally there is a train from Brive at 13:45 that gets into Gare d%26#39;Austerlitz — yes you had that one right — at 17:38. Looks like that might work well for you. Time for lunch in Brive and into Paris in good time for dinner.
Good to %26quot;see%26quot; you again!

Hi Irish, yes the %26quot;France bug%26quot; has well and truly bitten. This time we are actually starting in Sicily (with a car), then to Lucca, and then the Veneto. We will train from Veneto through to Lyon. Stay there 3 (?) nights - haven%26#39;t been there before. Then we thought pick up a car (not sure where - perhaps get a train from Lyon to closer to the next spot and get the car there - any thoughts on that idea? I have to look at the links here). I liked Arles (only had a day there) so maybe the train to Arles? or Aix? or Avigon? Maybe stay a night before moving to the apartment - We think we will get an apartment in St Remy de Provence (for a week)- yet to be selected. Then to Sarlat for a week (or more?) - have only been there on market day. So that%26#39;s the rough idea at this stage! As Sarlat is the last spot, that is why I was working %26quot;backwards%26quot; to get the plane from CDG. Then I can book the flights. There are many things I should be doing right now..... but this is MUCH more fun! Best wishes and thank you again.

never cut it close on a high stakes flight -- especially out of the utterly evil CDG where you really do need to be there 3 hours ahead
come in the day before and stay at an airport hotel like the Novotel or Sheraton and then you can take the RER into Paris for the day or evening -- or if you come in that morning, you could do a day trip to Chartres and come back to the hotel late --
stuff can happen in transport -- we have had trams break down, traffic jams, a Thalys break down and get into Paris 5 hours late and planes get in very late in our many years of travel -- don%26#39;t count on things going perfectly for a high stakes flight out of CDG
