The Camargue

Hi guys

We are planning on visiting the Camargue in early June but I only have half a day in which to do it. Just wondering, is this enough time and where would be the best place to go? We are staying in Arles.

Also what is the best way to see the area? Is there a guided safari which could be done in a morning?

Cheers

Nick

Also interested in general opinions on the area. Is it worthwhile? And how much of an issue are the mosquitos?

You will need a very effective mozzy repellent, even in Arles. When I was there last September I got bitten so badly on one calf that I got a hot swelling about 10 cm by 4 cm that didn%26#39;t go down for several days. It was very unpleasant.

I%26#39;m specious that you already know that this is not sufficient time.

We are here in Arles right now (Sept 13) having arrived on August 26th. We have scarcely seen or heard a mosquito. It hasn%26#39;t rained since we got here, perhaps that%26#39;s why. But I notice that many houses have no screens on the windows at all. We are a short block from the river, in the Roquette district, and we sleep with the windows wide open without screens. Last Friday we spent touring around the Camargue -- no mosquitoes. We had a picnic lunch in Stes Maries de la Mer, right next to a lagoon where lots of flamingoes were feeding -- no mosquitoes at all.

I bought some insect repellent to take into the Camargue -- 10 Euros -- but we didn%26#39;t use it at all.
